The Costa Rican Ministry of Health reported this Wednesday the first case of monkeypox in the Central American nation, it is a 34-year-old American man.

“The patient goes to a private health center on July 17 due to health problems, which is why he is admitted, on July 19 he presents lesions in the tonsils compatible with monkeypox, which is why the decision was made of the sample and was sent to the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health” center that confirmed the diagnosis, explained the note from the entity.

For her part, the head of the health portfolio, Joselyn Chacón, explained that the patient had shown symptoms since last July 13.

The person reported with the disease, resident in Costa Rica two years ago, had left on a trip and returned to the country since July 12, likewise, after being identified with the symptoms, he was placed in isolation.

Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that there are already more than 14,000 people affected by the disease in more than 70 countries, of which five died.

The WHO left the international community pending because they recently declared that they were going to meet to decide whether to declare an international emergency due to the outbreak.

Monkeypox causes symptoms such as fever, skin lesions, sore tonsils, decay, respiratory problems, among others.
