PICASSO - EL GRECO

Exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel | New construction, until September 25, 2022.

In a large special exhibition, the Kunstmuseum Basel examines Pablo Picasso's (1881–1973) confrontation with the old master Doménikos Theotokópoulos, better known as El Greco (1541–1614), who was born in Crete. Around 30 pairings of masterpieces by both artists trace this dialogue, which is one of the most fascinating in art history. Top-class loans from all over the world are assembled around a core group of works by Picasso from his own collection.

Pablo Picasso had a decisive influence on the course of European art history on several occasions. Internationally there is hardly a better known and better researched artist. Nevertheless, there is still something new to discover in his work. It is well known that Picasso's enthusiasm for El Greco left clear traces in his works. However, reference is usually made to his early creative phases up to the Blue Period. "Picasso – El Greco", on the other hand, suggests a reading according to which his preoccupation with El Greco was not only much more intensive than previously assumed, but also lasted much longer: Distinct references are recognizable in his Cubist paintings as well as in those from all later creative periods .

The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Basel | Neubau stages a concentrated, at times associative and centuries-spanning dialogue between Picasso and a role model on an equal footing.
