The Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi presented his resignation this Thursday through a statement, alleging that the pact of trust had been "broken" that maintained the Executive with the same purpose.

The resignation of the high-ranking Italian official, which according to local media was after losing the support of the populist Five Star Movement (M5S) coalition, was rejected by the nation's president Sergio Mattarella.

“I want to announce that this afternoon I will present my resignation to the President of the Republic. Today's vote in Parliament is a significant event from the political point of view”, Mario Draghi underlined.

Likewise, Draghi emphasized that the union with the Government has come to an end, "since my inauguration speech in Parliament, I have always said that this Executive would only succeed if there was a clear perspective of being able to carry out the Government on which the political forces had voted their confidence, "he said.

The absence of the Five Star Movement (M5E) during the vote in the Senate on a motion of confidence on a decree law on aid to families and companies against inflation, made the premier reject his political position.

The political coalition of the M5E had confirmed that it would not participate in the vote on the aid decree worth 26,000 million euros, finding it insufficient. Similarly, contradictions emerged between Prime Minister Mario Draghi and the M5E due to the latter's opposition to a government project that was considered costly and inappropriate.

Other information platforms declared that this position and, above all, the collapse of the coalition could cause early elections in the country, although the parties would exert pressure in this regard so that said situation did not take place.

"The President of the Republic has not accepted the resignation and has invited the President of the Government to appear in Parliament to give explanations and for an assessment of the situation to be made at that headquarters," said a statement from the Head of State.
