The camp has been detonating explosives for more than 19 hours, the police and army can't get close, the first reconnaissance robots arrive in the area, but they don't work.

The train and car traffic between Wannsee and Potsdam remains interrupted.

Impossible to approach the area within 1km radius

The Berlin fire brigade was called to Kronprinzessinnenweg in Nikolassee at 3:24 a.m. There had been "several large explosions" at the blast site. According to local residents, they could be heard from miles away. On Thursday afternoon, popping noises could still be heard from the direction of the blasting site

Due to further explosions and flying debris, the fire brigade was unable to start extinguishing the fire for a long time. It was not possible to approach the scene of the fire. The operation could be life-threatening, it said. In the meantime, however, two of the four localized fire sites are being actively fought.

Cause of fire still unclear

According to a police spokesman, it is still completely unclear how the explosion could have happened. Police chief Barbara Slowik told rbb that the area was secured like every night. According to Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD), there are no toxic substances on site.

The spokesman for the Berlin fire brigade, Thomas Kirstein, pointed out in an rbb special on Thursday evening that several buildings on the blast site in Grunewald were already "in full fire" when the fire brigade arrived there early in the morning.

The police will take care of determining the cause. "We had several conversations with the demolition experts today," said the fire brigade spokesman. "They are also investigating together with the LKA in all directions, and of course they are also interested in how this could have happened."
