Two new cases of monkeypox are reported in the Dominican Republic

The Ministry of Public Health of the Dominican Republic reported this Wednesday about two new diagnosed cases of monkeypox in the country.

“The cases were detected through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System. After the investigation, those infected were subjected to the corresponding tests, where confirmation of the diagnosis was received by PCR, carried out at the Dr. Defilló National Reference Laboratory of the Ministry of Public Health,” he said in a statement.

The entity specified that the new infections correspond to a 51-year-old woman, who resides in Santiago de los Caballeros; and a 19-year-old man who lives in Monte Plata. With them, the total figure so far rises to three.

The Ministry assured that both "present a stable health picture and are currently in isolation", at the Dr. Ramón de Lara Military Hospital, and that they follow up on close people who have had a possible contact, but so far they have not presented symptoms.

The Dominican entity urged citizens not to be alarmed and to be attentive to announcements about the evolution of the clinical status of patients.

In early July, the Ministry of Public Health reported the first case of monkeypox in the country, a patient from the United States (USA) and was isolated after the infection was confirmed.

On this day, the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, specified that so far nearly 14,000 cases of monkeypox have been reported in at least 70 countries, and five have occurred in Africa alone. deaths from the disease.
